This
month we’d like to focus on one of our musical influences,
Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.
When we first started singing, our dad came home one day with
a cassette of the Beach Boys 1965 Concert album. He bought it
so we could learn Long Tall Texan, which is a song on that album.
While none of us had ever heard of the Beach Boys (we were
very young), we immediately liked what we heard, and to make
a long story short, we literally wore that cassette out! We were
drawn to both the melody of the songs and the wonderful harmony
arrangements. The creative driving force behind the Beach Boys
was Brian Wilson, older brother of group members
Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson.
Together with cousin Mike Love, friends
Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston,
the Beach Boys created a body of work that was not only revolutionary
in the 1960’s, but has stood the test of time and truly
become a part of the American culture.
Brian Wilson was not only the primary songwriter, arranger and
producer of the Beach Boys, but it is his high falsetto in songs
like “I Get Around”, “Warmth
of the Sun” and “California Girls”
that completed the Beach Boys’ sound. Brian Wilson continues
to create the same great music today, his most recent release
being “Brian Wilson Presents Smile”,
a completion of the album the Beach Boys famously abandoned in
the 1960’s. I’ve played that so many times that I
almost have it memorized. Well worth the wait! Brian also released
a Christmas album in 2005, and like all of his
work in the past, the rich harmonies and musical arrangements
create a sound that is undeniably Brian Wilson. A great Christmas
album. next>>
